Evil Spirit Detector

Another quick story:

In the mid-to-late 1990s Dad decided to get his ear pierced.  Most of our congregation didn't mind. Some of them were used to his antics, others honestly didn't care about the controversy surrounding a man having pierced ears.

A few people were truly vexed by it, though. Didn't Dad know that pierced ears were something that gay men did to signal one another? (Yes, seriously. Although opinions were deeply divided as to whether it was a piercing in the left or right ear that gave out those kind of signals. ;) )

Did he want to attract evil spirits? Didn't he know that those spirits were attracted to deviant things like pierced ears on a man?

Dad smiled through their complaints. And then he would lean over with a gleam in his eye and say, "actually, it's an evil spirit detector." Meaning, of course, that anyone who was that concerned about the state of someone else's ear just might be under the influence of an evil spirit themselves.

He had a very good point. Nothing brings out the legalistic bigots more than doing something that they deem incorrect. Evil spirit detector indeed.
